1. The new Yahoo search engine and your web site
Since last week, Yahoo doesn't display Google results anymore. Yahoo has started to use its own new search engine software.

Although almost all experts expected it, Yahoo isn't replacing Google with its own Inktomi technology. Yahoo has developed a brand new search engine, based on Inktomi, AltaVista and AllTheWeb technology.

Yahoo's search engine spider is capturing the full text of web pages, up to a 500,000 characters limit. The new Yahoo search also supports many file types, including HTML, PDF, and Microsoft Office documents.

What does this mean to you and your web site?

Yahoo is a very big player in the search engine market. Its new search technology will power nearly half of all searches conducted within the United States.

That means that your web site should have good rankings in Yahoo if you don't want to lose customers.

How does Yahoo's new search engine spider work?

Yahoo's new search engine spider will follow every HREF link on a website. It seems that it doesn't follow SRC links such as images or FRAMES yet.

Yahoo's spider can follow dynamic links but Yahoo is advising webmasters to post static pages with text links directed to specific sections featuring dynamic content. Another good reason to use a sitemap on your web site.

Don't use shady search engine optimization techniques!

Yahoo has combined its own proprietary anti-spam technology with Yahoo Mail's SpamGuard technology to help filter out irrelevant, redundant or low-quality URLs and links. Taking advantage of the synergies between Yahoo Search and Yahoo Mail, these two services will share data to reduce spam and further improve the user experience across Yahoo.

Web sites that try to cheat Yahoo with unethical search engine optimization methods such as cloaking will have a hard time with Yahoo.

That means that it's more important than ever before to use ethical search engine optimization methods if you want to get good results on Yahoo.

How to optimize your web pages for Yahoo's new ranking algorithm

Fortunately, there's an easy way to optimize your web pages for Yahoo's new ranking algorithm with ethical methods. If you have our web site promotion tool IBP, do the following:
    1. Start IBP's Top 10 Optimizer.
    2. Enter the search term for which you want to optimize your web page.
    3. Select "Yahoo.com" in the search engines list and click the "Analyze" button.
IBP will analyze the web pages that currently have a top 10 ranking on Yahoo.com for your important keyword. As these pages have a top 10 ranking, they must have done something right and they must be compliant to Yahoo's ranking algorithm.

Based on this in-depth analysis of Yahoo's current ranking algorithm, IBP will tell you how to change your own web page so that it can get a similar high ranking on Yahoo. This is a serious and spam free way to improve your ranking on Yahoo.

2. Search engine news of the week

Yahoo! goes 'pay for exclusion!'

"In a move which really 'came out of the bushes' Yahoo! has let slip that it will soon exclude Inktomi paid inclusion URLs from its main results. [...]

Quite simply, if you've subscribed your URLs to the Inktomi index, then you'll be found in Yahoo! searches until 15th April. After that - YOU get dumped and have to pay to get back into Yahoo! You WILL still be found over at MSN and HotBot where Inktomi results are still primary though."

Google tops the search charts

"In January, 39 percent of active Internet surfers -or 59.3 million unique viewers- used Google to do searches, while the search tools at Yahoo and MSN attracted approximately 30 percent each [...] Yahoo had 45.7 million unique users, and MSN, 44.6 million."

Ask Jeeves UK steps up search battle with Smart Search

"[Search engine] Ask Jeeves UK is stepping up the pressure on the search engine market as it reveals improvements to the technology powering its news and weather information searches."

Study: Search engine users fickle

"Google is leader on Web, but there's little loyalty. [...] If you're not happy with the results on one site, it's not like you have to get in your car and drive to another store. You just type a new URL."

Search engine newslets

  • The new search engine Queryster allows you to quickly compare the results of different major search engines.
  • Use Yahoo's browser companion to search Yahoo's new engine with going to Yahoo first.
  • Pay per click search engine FindWhat acquires CometCursor, a provider of connected desktop consumer software.

3. Articles of the week

New Yahoo really something to see

"A test drive of the new Yahoo shows a richer graphic experience than Google, with more links to extras in the Yahoo network such as music and videos, comparison shopping and travel data."

The search engine that isn't a verb, yet

"Yahoo finally replaced Google's search results with its home-brewed search engine, which uses a robot, called Slurp, to read Web pages. Experts say Yahoo's new search engine is credible and roughly comparable to Google's.

And more important, Yahoo appears committed to the sort of engineering work that is needed to improve the quality of Web searches."

The hit factory

"It was launched by two students in a garage seven years ago. Today, it is the planet's gateway to the internet and is valued at $15bn. But could the Google phenomenon crash as spectacularly as it was born? [...]

At Forrester, Colony warns: 'How long did it take you to switch to Google? Seconds. How long will it take you to switch out of Google? Seconds.'"

4. Recommended resources
"Thanks for a great product."

"Since I began using IBP my positioning efforts have produced better quality results.

I really like the way IBP analyzes and classifies my pages against the top 10 ranking pages for a search term. IBP's reporting provides real direction and parameters within which to make page modifications that fall within the primary search engine categorization factors that must be addressed to achieve higher rankings.

Additionally, I typically utilize an excel spreadsheet of the URL submit pages for over 230 search engines and directories because it allows me to be more specific in how I approach search engine submissions.

IBP's directory submission process allows me to take the same approach and helps me automate the process of form entry for the directories they have included in the application.

    Thanks for a great product."
    Jordan, www.jmisnerconsulting.com

"A must for all webmasters."

"I recently purchased IBP to improve my ringtone site. This is a very competitive market and the IBP software has put me one step in front of my competitors. A must for all webmasters."
    Jason, www.net4tones.com
